My Trip - Charlotte

I should have started off this bit first. My friends live in an area called MINT HILL.

They have the Mint Hill Historical Society where their is a one room school house the old doctors surgery and the Ira Ferguson Store. On the Saturday I was there they had what we would call a small fete with craftsmen and people selling herbs and plants and the children were dressed in costume of the era.

In the doctor's surgery their was a crib with a quilt in it but also a quilt with all the American flags on it. No one knew anything at all about it. So you ladies from the other side of the pond might be able to shed some light on this quilt and educate us Brits.

I had also ordered book from The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley to be sent direct to my friends home. It is Lancaster County Privy Bags. Yes it is what it says. They used to make bags to hold the paper for the outside loo or privy.
I don't know about any of you but when I was a child our privy was outside in the garden and I had to go down 2 flights of stairs often in the dark and our newspaper just hung from a piece of string from a nail. Just shows how sewing was such an important part of every day life.
So if you are wondering what to do with all those scraps this could be your answer!

  1. Maybe it could hold my magazines on the back of the loo door instead. Now there's an idea Sue!!!

  2. Hi Sue, Those privy bags fascinate me. I saw some on another blog recently. Too nice to stick in the toilet!

  3. Hopefully someone can help you more than I can about the flag quilt. I believe the flags are cigarette silks. Giveaways that came in a carton of cigarettes. I have also seen them in crazy quilts.

  4. I am so excited about getting to see the privy bags book--does that make me a rather sad person?!!

I agree with Mayleen about the flags in the quilt. That was my first thought when I looked a little closer.
